These categories are not seven diagnoses and they are not a substitute for a dermatologist or physician. They are prompts for a better history—helping you notice what changed, what may overlap, and which questions belong with a medical professional versus a scalp or hair-care professional.

How to Use the 7 H’s

Begin with the hair itself. Is the change gradual or sudden, patterned or diffuse, patchy or centered around tension points? Are full strands shedding from the root, or are shorter pieces breaking along the shaft? Does the scalp feel calm, or is there pain, burning, scale, tenderness, or inflammation?

Next, build a timeline. Hair changes can appear weeks or months after illness, childbirth, surgery, medication changes, rapid weight loss, or major stress. The delay can make a trigger easy to miss.

Then move through the seven categories without assuming every clue is causal. One person may have hereditary pattern loss plus breakage; another may have a temporary shed that reveals previously subtle thinning. The framework works best when it invites investigation rather than certainty.
