Lavender and Hormones: What the Research Shows

The science is more nuanced than the headline.

The evidence is more nuanced than the headlines—especially when exposure, dose, age, and real-world use are considered.

Lavender has long lived in the wellness world as the scent of calm. It appears in essential oils, scalp products, lotions, shampoos, body washes, diffusers, sleep sprays, and products marketed for children.

In recent years, lavender has also entered a very different conversation: hormones. Some headlines call it an endocrine disruptor or warn that it interferes with estrogen and testosterone. That gets attention, but the science is more complicated.

The research shows that lavender deserves a closer look, particularly when exposure is repeated in children. It does not show that everyday lavender use has been proven to cause widespread hormone imbalance in adult women. That distinction matters.

What Does This Mean for Hair and Scalp Products?

Lavender appears in scalp oils, essential-oil blends, shampoos, conditioners, leave-ins, edge products, hair perfumes, growth oils, children’s hair products, and calming scalp treatments.

First, What Is an Endocrine Disruptor?

The endocrine system is the body’s chemical communication network. Hormones including estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, thyroid hormones, insulin, and cortisol influence metabolism, reproduction, mood, skin, and hair growth.

An endocrine-disrupting chemical can interfere with that signaling by mimicking a hormone, blocking a receptor, or changing hormone production or metabolism. Lavender entered the conversation because some laboratory studies suggested that lavender oil and selected components may interact with estrogen and androgen signaling.

Researchers observed estrogen-like activity and, in some experiments, activity that may reduce androgen signaling. That finding is scientifically relevant, but it is not the same as proving harm from typical human use.

Where the Concern Started

Early concern came from case reports involving young boys who developed breast tissue while regularly using products containing lavender or tea tree oil. The breast tissue reportedly decreased after the products were discontinued.

A 2019 study in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism later described young girls with premature breast development during repeated exposure to lavender-containing fragrances or products. Reported exposures included cologne, a bath product used since infancy, and a diffuser operating throughout the school day. Breast tissue regressed within several months after exposure stopped.

The pattern raised a legitimate question, but these were case reports—not large controlled trials. Exact absorbed doses were unknown, some products contained multiple ingredients, and premature breast development can sometimes resolve on its own. Association is not proof that lavender was the sole cause.

What Happened in the Lab?

The same research group tested lavender oil and several components in human cell systems. Some compounds demonstrated estrogen-receptor activity and anti-androgen activity under laboratory conditions.

A major caveat is concentration. Some experiments used concentrations far above what most people would experience from shampoo, lotion, or occasional aromatherapy. A substance producing an effect in a cell system does not automatically produce the same effect in a human body.

And Then Other Studies Found Something Different

Other researchers have reported much weaker signals. A controlled animal study applying lavender oil to the skin of immature female rats found no significant estrogen-like increase in uterine weight, a classic test of estrogenic activity.

A 2024 toxicology study examined linalool and linalyl acetate, two major lavender-oil components, using regulatory-style estrogen and androgen testing. It did not find meaningful estrogenic or anti-androgenic effects in the mammalian systems studied, and high oral doses did not produce the expected reproductive-organ changes.

These findings do not automatically erase the earlier results. They show that the evidence is conflicting—and conflicting evidence should make the conversation more precise, not more dramatic.

What About Adult Women?

There is little evidence showing that lavender causes harmful hormonal disruption in healthy adult women. In one small, short-term controlled study, 24 healthy women used a combined oral contraceptive and a standardized oral lavender-oil preparation. Researchers did not find meaningful disruption in the hormonal measures studied or evidence that lavender interfered with the contraceptive.

A 2024 randomized trial involving 68 women with PCOS compared lavender with metformin over 90 days. Women taking lavender had increased progesterone and shorter menstrual cycles. Lavender appeared to influence reproductive physiology, but the observed change was not necessarily harmful and may have been therapeutic in that context.

A more accurate description is that lavender may have biologically active effects on hormone-related pathways under certain conditions. That is different from saying it automatically disrupts hormones.

So Does Lavender Raise Estrogen?

Strong evidence does not show that normal lavender use consistently raises circulating estrogen in adult women. Laboratory estrogen-receptor activity is not the same as an increase in blood estrogen levels.

The pediatric reports also do not establish a simple mechanism. If lavender played a role, local tissue sensitivity, receptor activity, individual susceptibility, or other product ingredients may have mattered. The exact mechanism remains unsettled.

The Bigger Concern May Be Children

Children are not small adults. Their endocrine systems are still developing, and subtle hormonal signaling can matter differently before puberty. A handful of case reports associated repeated lavender-product exposure with premature breast development in girls or gynecomastia in boys, with regression after exposure stopped in some cases.

That is enough of a signal for parents and professionals to pay attention. It is not enough to say lavender has been proven to cause early puberty.

A cross-sectional study of more than 500 children did not find a statistically significant increase in endocrine disorders among children exposed to lavender or tea tree oils. Because the events were rare, however, the study could not completely rule out a smaller risk.

Natural Does Not Mean Hormone-Neutral

Plants contain active chemicals. That is one reason people use them: plant compounds can influence inflammation, mood, microbes, pain perception, and possibly hormone-related signaling.

The goal is not to fear plant ingredients. It is to stop pretending that natural ingredients cannot have biological effects. Lavender can be both soothing and biologically active at the same time.

Should Women Stop Using Lavender?

Current evidence does not provide a strong scientific reason for every adult woman to eliminate lavender. There is also not enough evidence to claim that lavender is incapable of influencing hormones under any condition.

If you use lavender in a body wash, occasional aromatherapy product, or shampoo and have no symptoms, little evidence currently shows that these exposures routinely cause hormonal problems in healthy adult women.

What Does This Have to Do With Hair Loss?

Estrogen, progesterone, thyroid hormones, cortisol, and androgens all influence the hair-growth cycle. Unexplained shedding or thinning should never be reduced to one trending ingredient.

Hair loss can be associated with PCOS, thyroid dysfunction, perimenopause, nutritional deficiencies, rapid weight loss, medication changes, stress, and many other factors. Lavender exposure may be one detail worth documenting in selected situations; it should not distract from the whole picture.

Hair changes alongside other hormonal symptoms deserve qualified medical evaluation.

We Don’t Know Yet Is an Honest Answer

The current research does not prove that lavender causes widespread hormone imbalance in women. It does show hormone-related activity in some laboratory settings and a pediatric signal that deserves continued study.

Read the evidence. Review the exposure. Keep the whole picture in view.
